Floating World Arts brought acclaimed underground Tokyo artists to Australia.

USUGROW

With mind bending meticulous detail, Usugrow’s work crosses the line between bad ass and refined elegance. While developing his vision and technique, Usugrow worked designing promotional graphics for Japan’s punk and metal scenes, Usugrows unique, stylized combination of traditional Japanese artwork and punk iconography soon made him the visual identity of Tokyo’s underground.

However Usugrows’ global notoriety begun when overseas brands saw the potential for collaborative projects, resulting in a series of collectable products and feature articles in leading counterculture and art publications. A global cult following quickly resulted.

As a conscious leader of his community, Usugrow has been using his fame to organize and promote a new Japanese art movement consisting of a tribe of highly talented artists with roots in the metal, punk, hip hop and tattoos, all of whom share his elegant aesthetics.

This group, known as The Shinganists consists of Usugrow, Mozyskey, Toshikazu Nozaka, Bene & Jun Kaneko and have exhibited collectively and individually across the globe, representing a true and revolutionary art movement.

Motifs of skulls and death are commonly depicted Usugrows black and white artwork, however instead acting as reminders our own mortality, Usugrow endeavors to represent them as symbols of rebirth and beauty.

Shake That Ass by Yasumase “Yone” Yonehara

Monday, August 30th, 2010

Floating Worlds is bringing iconic Japanese photographer, Yasumase “Yone” Yonehara to Australia for his debut Melbourne and Sydney tour. Yone’s signature sexy lo-fi polaroid style has changes the face of editorial photography throughout the world. His latest show titled “Shake That Ass” is an exhibition of his recent progression and experimentation with repetitive and abstract erotica and continuity. The two city show will be coupled with editorial work for Casio G-shock.

Yasumase ‘Yone’ Yonehare is undoubtedly one of the most dynamic and influential magazine editors and photographers in Japan.

During the 90s Yonehara’s work with the iconic Egg Magazine was instrumental in the emergence of ‘kogyaru’ (Japanese schoolgirl) culture into the global consciousness.

Yonehara’s signature ‘lo-fi sexy’ photographic style was established though a collection of erotic Fujifilm ‘cheki’ shots for Smart Girls with some of Tokyo’s hottest models. The unprecedented success of his first book, a folio of these Smart Girl portraits, bestowed him instant fame.

It was at this point that Yonehara’s sphere of influence became global, with brands such as American Apparel‘appropriating’ his unique photographic style for use in advertising campaigns. A new genre of editorial photography was born, founded on Yonehara’s instant Polaroid style.

In 2007 Yonehara launched the online publication cexwork.com which blends erotic art with blogs by influential photographers, friends and tastemakers from around the world.

Yone has spent recent years exploring themes of eroticism, continuity within discontinuity and the power of repetition in a series of acclaimed photographic exhibition.

A Creative Director sought by fashion labels, music groups and advertising agencies around the world,Yonehara brings a unique aesthetic, vision and Japanese pop-culture sensibility to the world of art.

Yone will also be exhibiting at Backwoods Gallery on the 24th of September 2010 and at Lo-Fi Gallery in Sydney on the 25th. Further details can be found on the Niceproduce.com, click here for Melbourne and Sydney.
